Australia complains to Beijing over ‘harmful’ transfer by Chinese language jet – POLITICO

Australia on Sunday criticized China for a “harmful maneuver” by a Chinese language fighter aircraft when it intercepted an Australian plane in worldwide airspace over the South China Sea late final month.

A Chinese language jet on Might 26 intercepted an Australian P-8 plane that was on “routine maritime surveillance exercise” in worldwide airspace, the Protection Division in Canberra stated in a assertion.

“The intercept resulted in a harmful manoeuvre which posed a security risk to the P-8 plane and its crew,” the division stated.

Austrialian Protection Minister Richard Marles informed native media that the Chinese language aircraft despatched out flares and shards of aluminum chaff. He referred to as the incident “very harmful.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese informed reporters the federal government has raised its “considerations in regards to the incident with the Chinese language authorities.”

The South China Sea is a contested area over which China has claimed rights, whereas Australia has in recent times elevated its protection and cooperation with the U.S. within the space.
